Sunshine Coast Health and Social Wellbeing Learning Precinct (Learning Precinct)

The Sunshine Coast

• One of Australia's fastest growing regions 330k - 500k by 2030

• Great place to live, dependent on one driver industry tourism and 2 followers, construction and retail

• Higher average age, lower participation rates, higher unemployment rate, lower retention of young people

• Over the next ten years, the key catalytic project that will transform the Sunshine Coast economy is the $2.03 billion development at Kawana of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH), comprising public and private hospitals and an international standard Skills and Academic Research Centre (SARC).

Education

• Quality tertiary offerings across Sunshine Coast TAFE (SCT) and University of the Sunshine Coast (USC)

• SCT Full service provider meeting 75% of VET needs across region, including in Health and Social Wellbeing

• Sunshine Coast TAFE has very high infrastructure utilisation rates double the nearest Qld TAFE triple the average and only has capacity to absorb a further 10% growth in student numbers

Why Kawana?

• Key strategic Greenfield site within Master Planned Kawana community offers unique ground floor opportunity to contribute to Kawana as a place to work, live, learn and play

• The Learning Precinct will be at the heart of a world leading synergistic educational network with the key components Learning Precinct SARC (200m away in SCUH) and USC Sippy Downs campus (to be connected to Kawana by GreenLink)

• This network will provide world class interlinked teaching, learning and research facilities underpinned by collaboration between SCT and strategic partners most obviously evidenced by the SARC collaboration, but also including Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) and Queensland Health (QH)

Application to Education Investment Fund (EIF) Regional Priorities Round

• Sunshine Coast TAFE will be submitting an application to the Regional Priorities Round of the EIF on 4 November 2011 for funding to establish Stage 1 of the Precinct

• Stage 1 delivers approximately 10,000m2 of facilities including Learning Spaces 5000m2, Support Spaces and Partner Activity 1000m2, Fitness Training Facilities and Gym 1300m2 and Customer Service Centre 300m2

• SCT working with partners (not for profit/private sector) to secure necessary funding to allow childcare centre (incorporating educational facilities) and Day Spa to be developed in conjunction with Stage 1

• Private sector likely to be source of funding for student accommodation in full development of site

• Key higher ed partner USC will fund establishment of its node of the Cooperative Research Centre for Young People, Wellbeing and information Technology in the Precinct

• SCT currently negotiating with SCRC and QH to establish strategic presence in Learning Precinct likely to be focused on mental health and community/population health
